September Blog: School Discipline

I am greatly concerned about what I read and view in media about school discipline, especially post-COVID.

Here is my viewpoint (from 2002)

Unfortunately, we are using an industrial-aged model of education in an era of technology. Too many classrooms and schools look exactly like they were 30 years ago.

We talk about meeting individual needs of students but the ‘one size fits all’ approach is the standard bureaucratic response.

Make schooling relevant for all students and this does not mean learning takes place inside four walls for 12 months at a time. Teachers must be held accountable for engaging students in their learning rather than child-minding.

Above all, schools today should be the most exciting places on earth. Let’s have some educational leaders who are willing to think and enact outside of the square!

I wrote the above comment to an article on the topic.

Still relevant? I suggest yes!
